River Life

The river bed of the Jatunyacu is born from great lahars and landslides caused by a long history of volcanic activity. The river is full of rounded river rocks of every color and size. It feel so humbling to be able to be part of this history even if for a fleeting moment.

Lady slipper orchids line the cliff walls along the Jatunyacu. These incredible and delicate flowers add a sense of transitory beauty to the power of the river.

River life can be pretty difficult sometimes. Here we take a much needed nap after lunch on the Alto Misahualli. This day we paddled 70 km in 5 hours, most of which was incredible class IV boulder gardens. On this trip I had the opportunity to kayak with paddlers from Ecuador and Chile! This beautiful, remote river is definitely one of my favorite here!

Always so many new friends to meet, so many places to explore, so many rivers to learn about and fall in love with. And at the end of a long day to return to my house, cook dinner, and collapse into bed.
